Portable gas-phase air cleaners use different technologies to remove gaseous pollutants, which include inorganic gases (e.g. carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide), ozone (O₃), and organic gases (e.g. volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and aldehydes). Hundreds of different gaseous pollutants have been detected in indoor air and portable air-cleaning devices are not effective at reducing radon levels in a building and are not recommended as a radon (also found in indoor air) mitigation measure (EPA, 2009).
